Anthony Molteno Scholarship

Professor Anthony Molteno was an academic-clinician ophthalmologist at the Dunedin School of Medicine of the University of Otago from 1977 until his retirement in 2015. Professor Molteno was awarded a personal Chair in ophthalmology in 2002.
He earned an international reputation for his research, most notably into the effects of the Molteno implant which was the first successful glaucoma drainage device that remains the “gold standard”. He established the Otago Glaucoma Surgery Outcome Study which is the world's longest ongoing follow-up study into glaucoma surgery including over 2000 operations.
His research interests have always been diverse including: stereotactic radiotherapy in the treatment of uveal melanomas, strabismus and ultraviolet photography of the living human cornea.
Professor Molteno, together with the late Associate Professor Gordon Sanderson, pioneered and then led the “Part I Course” and “Part II Course” which developed into the Postgraduate Diploma in Ophthalmic Basic Sciences and the Dunedin Ophthalmology Clinical Course respectively. He has received numerous international awards, including a Distinguished Service Award from the Royal Australian and NZ College of Ophthalmologists in 2009, and becoming an Office of the NZ Order of Merit in 2006.

Established in December, 2009 this scholarship is awarded on a yearly basis to a maximum of $10,000. Preference will be given to study within the University of Otago such as a Masters of Ophthalmology and a PhD.

Criteria
The successful applicant would be expected to present the project at the annual RANZCO Conference. Applications should be made online by May 20th each year. It is expected the successful applicant would be notified by the end of July each year.

Grants can be for masters thesis, assistance, smaller projects, traveling to present a paper etc.
A total of up to $10,000 will be awarded per year.
